How You Play Airsoft Games

Knowing the basics of airsoft games will increase your value as an airsoft gun player. If you show you have taken some steps to educate yourself on the types of games, you will find others will be more tolerant of your airsoft gun rookie status. Never try to impress players with your knowledge, when you are a rookie. You probably have no idea how little you know! Over-confidence without the knowledge, experience, and skill to back it up will cause you to be shot down (pun intended) quickly. There’s a balance between letting a fellow player know you have done some homework on the sport and being cocky. The first one will bring out the helpfulness in fellow players and you will quickly learn the secrets of playing the games and developing skills. The latter will probably cause you to become a “target” because they will want to put you in your place!

No matter how much you know about how games are played, to be a valued player, shooting skills are required. The only way to become an accurate shooter is to practice. This should be a priority.

There are three types of airsoft gun games:

  1. Military Simulation (MilSim)
these types of games are based on live action military role-playing. Each team will be assigned a mission or a goal. Clothing requirements may be required that are specific to the game. This is to create a more authentic and realistic scenario.
  2. Re-enactment
these types of games are based on a specific real-world event. The re-enactment game may be from anytime in history, up to and including current events. The games include anything from a simple skirmish to a small-scale battle. Some game organizers are hard-core enthusiasts that will require exact airsoft gun replicas of the guns be used, historically accurate gear, and restrict clothing to what was worn in the real-world event.
  3. Game modifiers
these types of games introduce tactical and strategic elements into airsoft game play. Game modifications can include the following medics (retrieve the “dead”, heal the “injured”), ammo limits (restricted by player, team, etc), immortals (aka gods, never die or die under very specific conditions), and re-spawn (player who is hit is allowed to return to starting point).

Within each type of airsoft are many games. Each game may be modified by the players. Even if you have played a game before, when playing with a new group, let them explain the specifics of their rules of the game. Even though airsoft gun games have the same game name, it may be played slightly different with different teams or in different areas of the country.
